This Ramadan, Emirate seems to be making an effort to increase awareness of the need to care for the environment. As well as a campaign to reduce food waste, they recently hosted a seminar on link between Islam and the environment. And it’s just as well as, the country has one of the largest footprints in the world. In 2008 the UAE even beat the US to claim the highest carbon footprint per capita in the world.

The Gulf News have published an interesting two-part feature on Islam and the environment by Mohammad Abdel Raouf who is in charge of environment research at the Gulf Research Centre, Dubai.  Highlights include:

  • “Islam forbids spoilage and destruction of biodiversity unless there is a real need and benefit. One Quranic verse to clarify the idea: ‘And do not do mischief on the earth after it has been set in order, that will be better for you, if you are believers’. (Al Aaraf 7:85)”
  • “Islamic laws govern all deeds of Muslims in a way that every tiny little action of these deeds such as littering for instance, he is accountable for. It governs all aspects of life. Thus, Muslims must try their best to be more committed to Islamic rules in the month of Ramadan. They must also show environmental stewardship in Ramadan as it is an integral part of Islamic rules.”
  • “Islam is unique when it comes to environmental issues because it emphasises the necessity and importance of environmental protection so that man can live in harmony with nature, as well as to achieve sustainable development, enrich life on earth, and make best use of available resources.”
